01

Who is Lomi?

Lomi was launched in 2021 by Pela as a countertop electric composter designed to make food waste reduction simple and accessible at home.

It positioned itself as a tech-forward solution to everyday sustainability, aiming to reduce the waste that ends up in landfills.

Core of Lomi

  1. Hands holding a bowl of vegetable scraps
Composting Company At first glance Lomi is a composting company; its hero product relates to urban composting.
  2. Cupped hands holding soil above food scraps
Waste Management On a deeper level Lomi is tackling waste management, specifically food waste.
  3. Gloved hands planting a seedling in soil
Waste Repurposing Lomi is a company that repurposes waste into something more useful.

Design Opportunity

If Lomi's real business is repurposing waste, the next stream to take on is baby waste: a new market for Lomi.

Piles of used disposable diapers and an overflowing diaper bin
01

Single use products can take up to 450–500 years to decompose in a landfill.

That's because of their mix of plastics, wood pulp and absorbent polymers.

02

4.5 billion biodegradable diapers are discarded each year.

Even though biodegradable diapers were made to tackle the issue of waste, almost all are thrown away. That's about 500,000 Chevrolet cars full of waste.

How can we repurpose baby waste?

  2. Pre-shredded fibrous waste

  4. Gloved hands holding dry pellets
    Pellets

Why pellets?

Easy Management

A dry, uniform output that's simple to store, empty and move.

Avoids the Ick Factor

Baby waste is already sensitive. Pellets read as clean and hygienic in a way loose compost doesn't.

Waste Repurposing

Pellets turn waste into a usable material, the same promise at the core of Lomi.

Market position

Market map from mass market to high-end luxury and low to high sustainable impact, with the high-end, high-impact quadrant marked as the opportunity
Existing nursery products cluster everywhere except high-end luxury with high sustainable impact. That's the opening for Genie.

Brand Direction

Three pillars taken from Lomi's existing language, which every design decision had to answer to.

Integrated

Designed to seamlessly fit into daily routines, the product blends function, form, and environment into a cohesive home system.

Integrated moodboard: soft blue and butter-yellow forms

Gentle

A soft, non-intrusive design approach that makes waste processing feel approachable and safe within everyday home environments.

Gentle moodboard: sage greens, soft fabric and rounded white forms

Organic

Rooted in natural cycles, the system transforms waste in a way that feels intuitive, material driven, and connected to ecological processes.

Organic moodboard: warm clay, stone and wood textures

The final direction, Integrated Care, sits closest to Lomi's own product language.

    Pet Waste

U.S. dogs produce over 10 million tons of waste annually.

6.5 million tons are left uncollected or sent to landfills.

Dog poop can impact ecosystems like oil or chemicals do.

Dog waste can carry parasites, E. coli and roundworms.

How can we tackle bacteria?

Two internal assemblies, the second with a red UV light ring under the lid

Pet Genie adds a UV light ring under the lid. UVC light at 140 degrees penetrates the DNA and RNA of bacteria and kills the harmful ones.
